Spindle · FAQ
Frequently asked.
Short answers. If something here is still unclear, the Discord is the place to ask.
Getting started
The basics
What is Spindle?
A vinyl-first listening journal for iOS and Android. Tap to log a spin, write a note if you want, and Spindle handles the stats, streaks, and history. It's built around the act of dropping the needle — not around cataloging what you own.
Is Spindle free?
Yes. The core listening journal — logging spins, your collection, stats, streaks, the journal, Challenges — is free. If a paid tier ever appears it will be for optional social features. The single-user app stays free.
Do I need an account?
Yes. Spindle uses an account to sync your collection, spins, and journal across devices and to power profiles, follows, and Challenges. Sign-up is email + password and takes about ten seconds.
When does it launch?
Both iOS and Android launch together — June 2026. Join the Discord for the heads-up the day it goes live.
Your data
Privacy & control
Where is my data stored?
On Spindle's servers, tied to your account. Your collection, spins, and journal sync across your devices. Nothing in your library is shared publicly unless you explicitly opt in (public profile, public notes, joining a Challenge).
Can I export my data?
Yes — listening history exports to CSV from the profile menu.
Can I delete my account?
Yes. Account deletion clears your synced data from Spindle's servers. Anything stored locally on your phone is removed when you uninstall the app.
Is my journal public?
Your journal is private. Spin statuses are optional and public when you share them. Challenge picks and comments are public when your profile is set to public — otherwise they stay private.
What it does
Features
How do I log a spin?
Open the app, pick a record, tap Spin. Spindle tracks the side while it plays and keeps lock-screen controls handy so you can flip the record without unlocking your phone. Tap again when the side ends.
What stats does Spindle track?
Total spins, total hours listened, streaks, top artists / labels / genres / decades, most-spun records, dormant records you haven't touched in a while, and your own listening patterns over time.
What's a Challenge?
A short series of daily prompts — usually a week — hosted by another listener. Each day you pick one record from your collection that answers the prompt, see what everyone else picked, and react. More on the Challenges page.
Does Spindle scrobble to Last.fm?
Yes. Connect your Last.fm account in settings and every spin you log gets scrobbled. Spindle complements Last.fm — it doesn't try to replace it.
Can I track needle and cartridge wear?
Yes. Add as many turntables as you own and Spindle tracks the needle and cartridge hours on each one separately. You'll get a reminder when any of them cross the retip threshold you set.
Integrations
Discogs, Last.fm, & friends
Do I need a Discogs account to use Spindle?
For the full experience, yes — Discogs is how your collection gets into Spindle. You can still browse in a lurker mode without connecting Discogs, but most of what makes the app useful (logging spins, stats, Challenges) needs your collection to be there. Connect once and you're set.
What happens when I refresh my Discogs collection?
Spindle pulls the current state of your Discogs collection and reconciles it with what's stored locally. Records you removed from Discogs get removed locally too (along with their spin history). There's a safety check that pauses large deletions when the response looks unusually small.
Does Spindle work with Apple Music or Spotify?
Not directly — Spindle is for vinyl. You can listen on whatever you want; Spindle is logging what you played, not playing it back.
Beta & roadmap
What's next
How do I send feedback or report bugs?
The fastest path is the Discord — there's a #bugs channel and a #feedback channel and I read both daily. Email also works: support@joinspindle.com.
Is there a public roadmap?
The roadmap lives in the Discord — there's a dedicated channel where what ships next gets discussed in public. Drop in to help shape the future of Spindle.
Can I host a Challenge?
Hosting slots are limited while Spindle is in early release. The application is open though — if you've got a taste angle and a week of prompts, pitch one on the Host a Challenge page.
Still stuck?
Ask in the Discord.
That's where bugs get reported, features get discussed, and the Challenges schedule gets argued about. We'd love to have you.
